General and Useful Information

Melba Shed uses Google Docs to store certain files and pictures. Most of these have been made publicly available, such as all our Newsletters in pdf format

Google Docs files may not be accessible from Internet Explorer version 8 (IE8). To fix this issue read this short guide to allow IE8 to access Google Docs. This is required to view newsletters, walks maps, walks GPS file etc on line with IE8. There are no issues using Firefox or Google Chrome browsers

Note: Google docs was not working properly from 18th-23rd Sep 2010, 31Jul-4Aug 2011 and late Oct 2011 and most could not access any of our shared files that reside in Google Docs. This included all Newsletters and many of the Walks maps. If this occurs again, the only way around it, is to log into any Google account and access should then be available

The Shed Web pages are tested in the latest browsers versions i.e. Firefox 12, Explorer 9, and Google Chrome the latest (currently 18) browser versions. There may be some problems with Safari as used on an Ipad. See here "It is a well known ...that the mouseover function (hover-event) is not recognized by touch screen devices". The solution may be for us to use Spry 2 now called Spry UI. OK for now you can see the first level menu. To get to the sub pages go to the main page and then at the bottom click on the next page link. It will take you through any sub pages and then to the next top level page

The Shed Web site is hosted by VentraIP. Currently pages are designed through Dreamweaver CS5 using a frame based structure. Whilst effective most have moved away from frames and Dreamweaver is not the cheapest or easiest to use. Currently we are thinking about open source free products on which to redevelop and provide an easy ongoing platform for the future. The products being considered are Joomla and WordPress. Starting to lean towards WordPress as its apparently an easier system overall. There was an issue which was use of tables which we use in Melba Shed to record our program and walks. It seems there are add-on code that enables Wordpress to accommodate tables. It can be used to run a web site with or without blogs/forums for which Wordpress is famous
