The Christmas BBQ, Sausage Sizzle was held with many bringing extra plates to complement the BBQ. In fact too much came that many went home with full arms! We initially had reports on cycling, walking, the meccano and bowls activities. John Burrowes reported on attending the Tuggeranong Shed Christmas lunch. Max Huntington reported on his experiences at Koorabri in the Brindabella Valley during the storms on late Nov 2011. (Sat: night) Rotary Trivia night. Rotary held another trivia night at West Belconnen leagues Club and Melba Shed hosted a table. The event helped Rotary raise funds for the world-wide eradication of polio. Our Shed was represented by about ten members and partners at the event. This was a great night out enjoyed by all and particularly by Alex Ritchie, Jim Grenfell and Laurie Power's table which managed to come equal first only to be pushed into second place in the tie breaker | |

The Shed went on an excursion to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and had ranger guided tour of the sanctuary. Later there was a sausage sizzle lunch at Webbs Green picnic area. In the sanctuary lots of birds were seen including a brolga, a couple of bower birds and a pair of currawongs titillating one another and then doing it. The guys left the shed around 8.30AM and were back around 3PM, after also viewing progress on the Cotter Dam. They currently have 16 horses and ponies helping around 100 disabled riders per week. It costs something lie $3,000 per year to feed, care and provide masseur facilities for each horse. The Shed undertook an excursion to Gundaroo organised by Don Gruber. We started with coffee at the Cork St Cafe and had a talk about Gundaroo by Jenny Thorne of the Gundaroo old Store. We then had a short tour of the main village visiting her store and old workshops behind. This included some amazing old machinery and an old 1951 Jaguar XK140. We then visited the Royal Hotel and looked at the new purpose built slat building for their Grazing Restaurant. We walked back past the Gundaroo Colonial Inn. The Shed went on a guided visit to the National Botanic Gardens which started at 10.30AM. Members had to pay $4 each to pay for the guides. Members broke into three groups. One group looked more particularly at the Mallee Scrub section and the Rainforest walk. They learnt that Australia only has true tropical Rainforest covering about 0.1% of its land mass, with the biggest concentrations in Queensland. (17 members attended) | |

Walk: Gungahlin Hill - Gungaderra NR. 5 of us started walking from Gungahlin Hill on Barton Highway. We went to the Trig and then across to a couple of features in Gungaderra NR. The hill (GN44) just east of Gungahlin Hill we renamed "Poon Hill" in honour of Richard Poon. It was an easy 4.5Km stroll, but took 2 1/4 hrs. Mt Majura: 7 of us walked from Hackett climbing to top of Mt Majura and winding our way back down, 9Km, 3 hrs. Medium walk but quite a stiff climb to Majura, especially the last part after Sheep Camp junction. Scenery and views were great. Morning tea at the AirServices radar station on the top. We met at car park on Kellaway St, Hackett (via Phillip Ave) at 10AM and at the shed at 9.30AM | |
