Urambi Hill (Tuggeranong Stone Wall)

6 of us met at the Shed or Kambah parking on Learmonth Drive. We then walked up to Urambi Hill (713m) which we all found a bit strenuous. Great views were hampered by the low cloud/fog conditions. We then walked around the ridge to the north and headed down the wide valley south. Unfortunately we were 70m too far east and had to endure some boggy sections of mud and cattle laughing at us before re-joining the correct track. Everyone came out with wet feet and muddy shoes. We then crossed Tuggeranong Ck to the Stone Wall and back.to the cars via the Tuggeranong Dam wall. We finished with coffee and thick shakes at Maccas Weston.. 8.5Km, Medium, 3 hrs. Parliament Houses Gardens

11 of us met at the Shed or NPH and drove to the underground carpark of NPH and parked in the 3 hour bays. We left from the main entrance to NPH by 8.45AM and walked around the outside tracks of the house in an anticlockwise direction. We took the lower track on the Senate side stopping at the Sundial and viewing the tennis courts and soccer pitch. On the southern Ministerial wing we stopped at the main entrance. Several members went a bit far and caused the heart rates of the police to increase! It was just a bit of fun so on we went. We then entered the eastern gardens on the Reps side and took the higher direct trail which went past more tennis courts and then to the formal gardens area where we stopped to look at the gift from the Israeli Parliament, the viewing area over the Formal Gardens, the Bali memorial and the Compass & Perspective ( a gift from the WA Parliament). We continued on to the corner where we visited the RSL Memorial. We then went down Federation mall being a little hampered as they were setting up for Australia Day and we could not visit the Capital Hill Unconformity viewing point (State Circle Cutting). We entered the Old House of Reps Gardens, saw the Women's Suffrage Memorial and various rose plantations (and more tennis courts) and also Constitution Place on the eastern side of the Gardens. We then went across to the National Rose Gdns East and then onto the National Library Cafe for coffee. No one partook of the Mug of coffee as its too 'humongous'. We were also somewhat bemused by the 7 foot guy who went into the cafe for coffee! We then came back along Parkes Place West directly to the Magna Carta Place. We then entered the Old Senate Rose Gdns, seeing where the old cricket pitch was and also more tennis courts, then up Federation mall to the Foundation Stone, then to the Carpark. Easy 5.7Km 2.5hrs. (Toilet in CP & east side of gdns. Coffee at NLA or NPH. Parking under Parl Hse is free for 3 hours). Mulligans Flat North NR 6 of us met at the Shed and 2 more joined us at the CP along Mulligans Flat Road. Unfortunately due to road works we were not able to park in the exact car park and had to improvise by parking on the grass. This caused one member Jim G to miss the spot and not take part. We then walked along the southern boundary and climbed up to the main border fenceline and followed it around to Oak Hill. The GPS said 804m but the topo map says the trig point is 798m. We returned along the border right to the Gundaroo Road crossing and came down the Bicentennial trail route back to the cars. We of cause stopped to annoy the hell out of a poor echidna. We enjoyed quite different view of Gungahlin, Belconnen, North Canberra and away north and west over NSW. The walkers were of the opinion that it should be graded harder than Medium. Medium 7.0Km, 3 hrs. Walkers: Alan S, Bob S, Don G, Geoff G, John E, Peter M, Ron T, Greg H

10.45AM start

Yankee Hat, Namadgi The Shed went on an excursion and walk to Yankee Hat. We left the Shed around 8.45AM and were back by 3.00PM. Of the 20 members who went 16 walked out to Yankee Hat paintings leaving around 10.45AM and returning by 12.45PM. We walked over a grassy trail to aboriginal art site, with some gentle climbing towards the end of the trail. Lots of kangaroos were seen and a few rabbits. We then returned via the same route to the Car Park and picnic area for BBQ lunch prepared by the other 4 members who stayed behind. Driving distance was about 77Km from Shed via Kingsford Smith, William Hovell, Parkway, Banks, Tharwa. We turned right near end of bitumen on to Old Boboyan Road at about 73.1Km then it was a 3.4 Km dirt 2WD road to Carpark and locked gate. There were two concrete causeways with a little water to cross over. However, these distances are the ideal, as we detoured through eastern Tuggers to avoid road works that were a non-issue. Of course one vehicle took an alternative faster route and were late. Our walk was made interesting by meeting two Spanish travellers who had a camper van and one of whom joined us for the BBQ. Mitch also entertained us at the BBQ with his excellent one foot squashing of soft drink cans; no doubt his excellent TAMS training! Easy-medium walk of 6.2km taking 2.0 hrs. Walkers: Alan S, Blair H, Bob S, Don G, Geoff G, Harry R, Mike M, Peter H, Peter M, Phil L, Richard P, Ron T, Ted K, Ted T, Terry M, and Greg H. BBQrs: Keith G, Laurie P, Max, Stuart A

Ginninderra Ck to Charnwood

Deferred due to inclement weather. To be rescheduled. 8 of us met at the Shed by 8.20AM but decided to not walk as it looked set in and the rain did in fact get heavier. Ted and Greg adjourned for breakfast and coffee at Maccas Charnwood. It seems a reasonable coffee and rest spot with adequate in door tables so it will make a nice stop spot for the future rescheduled walk and maybe for a bike ride down this way

Molonglo Gorge

12 members and friends drove to the Air Disaster memorial however the gate was locked on the main road. We then went to Molonglo Gorge picnic area and walked the 3.3Km to the Blue Tiles picnic area. The total walk was about 6.6Km and took around 3 hours. It was technically a medium walk but somewhat strenuous with the rock hoping and ups and downs encountered. We were provided with some expert geological information form Lynton J. We were also lucky to see a Countrylink train traverse the gorge on its way from Canberra to Sydney. Members were interested on where the Molonglo and Queanbeyan rivers joined. A map is included that shows where. It is 900m SW of the junction of the Sutton and Yass Roads

Gossan Hill

9 of us (including Barbara J.) walked from Jamison east across Aranda playing fields, then over bridge across Belconnen Way and around Gossans Hill and back finishing with coffee at the Southern Cross Club. We saw this strange light coloured scribbly gum (GPS 690068 6097585) that was really odd and had been effected by some insects or disease. A couple of nymphlike statues were also encountered travelling through part of South Bruce. We also saw this plaque in Aranda playing fields placed there by Doug Anthony, commemorating the start of work in the district of Belconnen in 1966 (GPS 689158 6096925). The walk was an easy 6Km and fairly flat, 1.5 hours
Gossan refers to the weathered iron cap covering a mineral deposit. At Gossan Hill copper and other minerals have been leached from the surface rock by percolating water, leaving a concentration of iron on the surface. There are some reddish outcrops to the west of Radford College. I have scanned and attached pages from a NCDC book on Canberra's Sites of Significance for Belconnen. It gives and overview of their B9 College St cutting and B10 Gossan Hill outcrops
Lyn Craven, our CSIRO Xpert has had indentified that strange spotted gum tree we saw near Radford College on the Gossan Hill walk of 10th Feb 2011. He says "The species apparently is Eucalyptus rossii, one of the scribbly gums. What causes the scars to develop is unclear. Someone suggested that there might be an insect with larvae that feed gregariously, and that some predator of the larvae causes the scar. If so, why does the scar not grow over??? Basically, no-one knows"

The hill (GN44) just east of Gungahlin Hill we renamed "Poon Hill" in honour of Richard Poon who thinks its Crace Hill. It was an easy 4.5Km stroll, but took 2 1/4 hrs due to soft ground and some tall grass. Several of us adjourned to the Soccer Club for coffee

Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve 6 of us met at the Shed 8.30AM and started walking just after 9AM from Mulligans Flat car park (It's in Forde. You take Horse Park Drive following signs to Mulligans Flat. i.e. take Francis Forde St and then left onto Amy Ackman St) We strolled around this new reserve following bird trail. We took 3 hours 20 minutes for the easy 8.1Km stroll with several stops at the Woolshed to chat to the rangers, one of whom was from Boorowa and knew of Don, as well as at the Bird Dam and at the mysterious bundle of bricks that were scattered around. There were a Birds of Mulligan Flat brochure and a Mulligans NR brochure available in boxes near the main gate (G2 on the map). The CP is around 13Km from the Shed by road. We also detoured to the site of the original Mulligans Flat School and the Quartz Ridge in the south west corner. We also learned about mistletoe fungus growing on gums and killing them off and saw several examples

Cooleman Ridge 5 of us met at the Shed 8.30AM and started walking just after 9AM from Kathner St, Rivett. We walked along this ridge skirting past house at Rivertt and Chapman and climbed the trail to the top of Mt Arawang (765m). On the way back we travelled along the ridge top visiting the hill with the Split Cherry and huge Kurrajong tree, Cooleman Trig, and the Niblo Boulders. We enjoyed superb views of Canberra from the north down south to Mt Tennant and the Brindabellas. It was a medium walk with a couple of moderate climbs over 8KM distance and took us 3 hours in total. It was suggested by Bob Wagg

Deeks Forest Park to Misery Hill (Molonglo Area) 5 of us including 1 visitor, Peter Davis' wife, Lyn, walked through the remnants of the FP that was burnt out but has regrown, across the Molonglo at Southwells Crossing and around Misery Hill with good views over Molonglo and Stromlo and across to the Aboretum. This walk follows part of Peter Davis's walks in this area. Much of this area will become Molonglo in the future. We met at the Shed and left by 9.35AM arriving at the Deeks FP car park by 10AM. The walk was extended to 3.25 hrs by walking down to Misery Point on the Molonglo but as we could not cross we had to retrace our path and follow much of the same route back. Thus a planned 7.5Km walk became a 10Km walk. Lyn also brought information from Peter Davis' log which provided some background on the early settlers of the area such as Arthur Webb and the old man Develin (the Misery Point ghost?) We saw some large roos around Misery Hill (UTM 686229 6090955) altitude 600m

Shepherds Lookout to Molonglo and Murrumbidgee Rivers 7 members met at the Shed at 9.30AM on a sunny morning with light winds and walked from the Stockdill Road car park to Shepherds Lookout which provided grand views of the Murrumbidgee River and its valley. We then went down the trail to the Molonglo River and its historic old bridge crossing, finishing with a walk down to the junction of the Murrumbidgee and Molonglo Rivers. After recent rains there was still some flooding with the Bidgee running strongly. Whilst we could just get to the Bidgee banks we were stopped from getting closer than 25 metres from the junction of the two rivers. However we could see the general area of the junction. The trail is in good condition with some repairs and tree clearing having recently been made. We had some some scrambling on a rocky and sandy track. Medium walk of 5.5Km taking 2 Hours with some climbing back up the track

Ginninderra Ck Umbagong Park 5 of use walked but not all together due to a mix up on start times from Umbagong Park Car Park, off Florey Drive, around 10AM down the Creek through Umbagong District Park to Macgregor then to Bel Paese Cafe, Kippax for coffee. Some of us continued back through Latham at a leisurely pace along paths and the creek whilst 2 members left early to go to Toastmasters. Total of 7.1Km 2 hours. Note we could not see the aboriginal axe grinding site due to the flooded creek, and 2 of us saw these strange concrete edifices located along the route through Macgregor

Goorooyarroo NR 5 of us including 1 visitor climbed Old Joe a hill on the border with views over the Federal Highway and Canberra. Nice walk through woodland and grassland with some amazing views. We visited an original border marker X4. The climb to Old Joe hill was quite steep but the views were worth it. The walk was a medium one but ended up as 8.4Km and took around 3 hrs. See TAMS brochure. We started & finished at the car park along Horse Park drive on the way to the Federal Hwy.

Bruce-OConnor Ridge 5 of us walked 5.9Km from AIS car park (near entrance to AIS Athletic Stadium) under GDE across Bruce Ridge, down a natural bike path and took a circuit around O'Connor Ridge and back. We synchronised our parking nicely with athletic carnival for Canberra Girls Grammar. On O'Connor Ridge we discovered a strange sort of rock pile memorial and later some art like metal sculptures left by ACT work crews who used reinforcing rods as thier raw material. Another Gov public art piece?

Mt Ainslie 10 of us walked from behind the War Memorial to the top then around down to the Quarry and back. 6.5Km total distance over 3 hours. There was a steep walk to the top on the sealed stepped track, and short climb on a rough track to the Quarry. Terry's knees held out just! A few tame roos and one wallaby were spotted.

Black Mountain 11 of us including Phil's granddaughter walked from Belconnen Way car park to the top and then around the Forest Walk. 6.6Km total. It was a medium but steep climb to the top. We then dropped back down the trail and walked clockwise around the Forest Trail and then back down the way we came. Half way down we deviated out to the west and then went across country for 1Km back to the cars. All enjoyed it except Peter M who's knees played up somewhat (those damn knees again!)
